A Lucky Hand in Little Havana

The smallest details often tell the biggest stories.

When I first started taking photographs, I was drawn to close up shots. There is something special about filling the frame with the details that people usually overlook. A worn deck of cards, the texture of a table, or the way light falls across an object can tell a story just as powerful as a wide landscape.

This photo was taken during my walk through Little Havana. I noticed a group of friends gathered around a table, completely focused on their card game. Instead of photographing the people, I was drawn to the cards themselves. The chipped edges, scattered hands, and colorful game pieces instantly caught my attention. Looking through my camera, I realized the beauty was not in the entire scene, but in the small details that brought it to life.

As I stood nearby, the game became just as entertaining as the photo. One player confidently placed his cards on the table, convinced he had won. He leaned back with the biggest smile, already celebrating his victory. A few seconds later, another player quietly laid down a single card that changed everything. The entire table burst into laughter, and the winner's celebration quickly turned into playful embarrassment. It was one of those moments that reminded me why I love candid photography. Genuine reactions can never be recreated.

Close up photography encourages us to slow down. It reveals textures, colors, and emotions that often disappear in a wider frame. The scratches on the cards hinted at years of friendly competition. The way the cards overlapped showed the chaos of the game. Even the lighting added warmth, making an ordinary table feel full of life and personality.

Looking back at this image, I don't just see playing cards. I remember the laughter, the conversations I couldn't fully understand, and the joy of watching strangers enjoy a simple afternoon together. Sometimes the most meaningful photographs are not the grand views or famous landmarks.
