Sometimes the best photographs come from taking a step back.

Eye-level view of a serene landscape with a calm lake

One of the first lessons photography taught me was that not every subject needs to fill the frame. While close up photography allows us to appreciate the smallest details, wide angle photography tells a different story. It creates context. It shows where a moment happened, how everything fit together, and reminds us that the space surrounding a subject can be just as meaningful as the subject itself.

This photograph was taken on a day that was filled with mixed emotions. My friends were moving to Seattle to begin a new chapter in their lives. As they boarded their flight, I stood outside watching the plane climb higher into the sky. Instead of zooming in, I chose to capture the entire scene with a wide perspective.

The plane appears small against the endless blue sky, and that is exactly why I love this image. It reflects how we often feel during moments of change. We may seem small compared to the world around us, but every journey begins with a single departure. The empty sky surrounding the aircraft gives the photograph room to breathe, making the viewer focus on the feeling rather than just the object.

As I watched the plane disappear into the distance, I couldn't help but joke that if they forgot anything important, it was far too late to turn around. We had laughed about who would visit first and promised that Seattle was only "a short flight away," even though everyone knew it would not be as simple as that. Goodbyes are always easier when they're filled with a little humor.

This image reminds me that wide angle photography is not about making the subject bigger. It is about making the story bigger. The open sky, the distance, and the feeling of possibility all become part of the photograph. Without that space, it would simply be a picture of an airplane.

Whenever I look back at this photo, I do not just remember a flight leaving Miami. I remember standing beneath a clear sky, saying goodbye to good friends, and realizing that every ending is also the beginning of someone else's adventure. Sometimes, all you have to do is look up.
